Valley Vines

Cows agree: buying milk definitely keeps them in the black!

The owners of Sim-Kno Farms in Red Hook raise Holsteins and like to promote buying local products with a big banner tied to the side of their barn: “Think Global Buy Local.” While pouring over the stock market quotes, you can sip a glass of Hudson Valley milk. (You may need it to settle your stomach!) In the words of the legendary Phil Rizzuto, “Holy cow!”

Faire Thee Well

James Shankman of Millbrook, Gina Leonaggio of Stanfordville and Sarah Anderson of Pine Plains dressed the medieval part and standing in front of a reminder that credit cards are more than welcome!

Fear not or fear a little lords and ladies: Now that the Renaissance Faire has held its last joust, Sterling Forest’s revelry will turn to the dark side, giving way to the “Forest of Fear” on weekends in October. Like many summer attractions in the valley, Halloween has become a way to extend the summer season for businesses. Dutchess County’s Splashdown Park will be holding its own fear fest, including an area for toddlers that is fairly unscary. Local wineries, orchards and farms are also attracting tourists, not just with their offerings but with their own brand of spooky delights to welcome during what has become the season of All Hallow’s Eve.

A last goodbye to this year’s Renaissance Faire revelers.

Speaking of frightful happenings, the case of the hearse stolen from Route 17 reported in Vines has been solved. The car and its ghoulish props were recovered by the New York State Police and returned to The Castle in Chester. “We aren’t going to have anyone cart it away this time,” said owner Susan Bertsen. The Castle will have two weekend shows (one for the younger set) this year to celebrate the scary holiday.

You know it’s election time when….

Roadside signs are popping up quicker than dandelions in springtime. Let’s hope politicians will remember to thank us if they’ve won (and curse us silently if they lose) and then remove their reminders after Nov. 6.

Bumper-sticker sentiments

Some people just don’t like Indian Point power plant in Westchester County’s town of Buchanan. In fact, a new group, Friends United for Sustainable Energy (FUSE), is challenging the plant’s re-licensing of one of its reactors and has filed papers to that end with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, according to a report published in The New York Times. The group claims those in charge of Indian Point, as well as previous owners, chose lesser design requirements than ones applied to newer plants. FUSE, aptly named, has a short one when it comes to nuclear energy in the Hudson Valley.

Crum Elbow Bridge

Crum Elbow Bridge on Route 9 by the Vanderbilt Estate is getting a makeover, thanks to the state Department of Transportation. Cornelius Vanderbilt’s bridge is in need of repair and since he’s no longer around to foot the bill, taxpayers will pay to make needed repairs to the “crum”bling bridge.

New businesses join our HudsonValley’s vines:

Farmer’s Table: Don’t forget to leave a tip for the farmer!

Pugsly’s Barbershop: Is Lurch lurking at the doorway to welcome customers?

Quiet Mountain Sanctuary: Where every man’s (and woman’s) home can be a castle if only for a little while.

Adventures of Jessica Rose: Is this the 21st-century version of Alice’s famed adventures? Visit Woodstock and find out!

Musical Munchkins of Ulster County: Former residents of Oz or singing donut holes at Dunkin’?
