Oral history, with a bite

 

Ted Sorensen, President John F. Kennedy’s speech writer, longtime aide and special adviser, let fly his sarcastically tipped arrows in a talk last week at the Alumnae House of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie.

Stumping for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, Sorensen poked fun at everyone from President Bush to several of the presidential candidates in both major parties.

Asked what Obama lacks in comparison with JFK, Sorensen quipped: “Aside from a million dollars and a war record, other than that he doesn’t have a domineering father like JFK had.”

 

As far as a vice president candidate, Sorensen said it was too early. “That’s a decision that should not be made until you see where you’re strong, where you’re weak. Who in the party, what segment of the party you need to shore up. Those decisions should not be made a year and half in advance.”

Sorensen, credited as a research associate for JFK’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, “Profiles in Courage,” but long considered the true author, laughed heartily when asked who actually wrote the book.

“You’ve got to buy my next book to find out. It’s all in there.”

His memoirs, due out in May, will be a kiss and tell book covering his life in politics, which is almost his entire life, he said with a laugh.
