Movers beat those relocation blues

Moving can be a pain in the back. Orange County’s United Way offices recently moved from their third floor leased space at Walden Savings Bank’s Scotts Corner Drive location.

Although they were only moving next door to the new Orange County Chamber of Commerce building, being able to be up and running by 9 a.m. Monday was essential, said John Checklick, president of the nonprofit.

Eastern Orange United Way in Newburgh and Orange County United Way in Middletown merged in 1987 and the new organization relocated to Goshen. That moved was coordinated by Arnoff Moving and Storage, which was established in 1924 and became an American Van Lines agent in 1948; the company is headquartered in Poughkeepsie.

When it came time for the organization to move to Walden Savings Bank’s space, they called on Arnoff a second time. Then, when the new Orange County Chamber of Commerce building was completed next door to United Way’s office, United Way called upon the long-established moving firm again.

“They were great,” said Checklick, who said the team leader came and sized up the job and knew “exactly how many boxes we would need.” United Way workers did their own packing and movers arrived Friday, July 27, at 8 a.m.

By 3 p.m., all four private offices were set up and the open-space cubicles where employees sit were ready to roll.

“We had only leased the space temporarily from Walden Savings,” said Checklick. United Way had signed a memorandum of agreement with the chamber to become one of its tenants once the new building was completed.

United Way’s new 2,100-square-foot office space is comparable to its formerly leased space, but the layout is tailored to fit, says Checklick, adding it now has a private conference room and additional storage area for files.

Still, some things in the moving process don’t change. “We are still sorting out boxes,” admitted Checklick. “We are going through our files to purge what we no longer need, to put those materials in storage … and it’s a long process. We also have off-site storage space for files but it’s a plus to have a storage room here in our new office.”

James Monroe of the law firm Dupee and Monroe in Goshen also utilized Arnoff’s services for his firm’s move on Friday, Sept. 29. Arnoff arrived promptly at 8 a.m. and was finished by 4 p.m. The move was across town. “We were in 30 Matthews Street and moved to ‘Lawyers Row’ on Main St.,” said Monroe. “We went from a comparable space, approximately 5,000 square feet. We bought this building for $850,000. We worked on the restoration prior to moving in. We’re just putting on the finishing touches. Our objective was to make the leap from tenant to owner and begin paying towards some equity.”

The firm’s four attorneys and their support staff of four are still unpacking the boxes. “Arnoff conducted themselves very professionally and executed the move without any incident,” said Monroe. “They did some of the packing, too, and arranged the furnishings. We were very satisfied with their service.” Like United Way, Dupee and Monroe are still unpacking boxes, but are up and running for business.

Like most who have experienced moving, whether it’s to a new office or home, the packing-up part was easy; it’s the unpacking that seems to go on forever.
