--Banking & Finance

With the Dow Industrials on a roller coaster, taking many stocks along for the ride, investors are increasingly turning to “safe” bonds and keeping their fingers crossed that the Federal Reserve will lower interest rates when it meets Sept. 15.

--Economic Development

When the Hudson Valley Technology Campus (HVTC), the sprawling, vacant former IBM semi-conductor manufacturing facility situated in East Fishkill, recently lost out to Singapore in its bid to attract a multinational firm headquartered in Europe, it underlined the degree to which it is a player in the global marketplace.

It’s not difficult to find lodgings in Rockland and Dutchess counties it seems there is a new motel or extended-stay hotel popping up everywhere you look.

Not so in Orange County, but it’s playing catch-up, especially around Stewart International Airport and along the future Interstate 86 corridor.

Farther south, where Woodbury Common in Central Valley attracts 10 million visitors each year, the town only boasts two small motels. That will change when Martin Milano opens a Hampton Inn (www.hamptoninn.com) right behind Woodbury Centre.

The IBM facility in East Fishkill, known as the Hudson Valley Research Park, is a beehive of semiconductor activity, with 46 buildings, including an advanced 300mm chip fabrication plant; approximately 6,000 employees distributed among 20 different divisions; serviced by 2,000 vendors and contractors; and five tenants.

--Health Care

St. Francis Hospital, the only Level 2 trauma center in the Hudson Valley region, is also one of the busiest in Dutchess County: 32,000 patients went through its emergency room doors in 2006, accounting for 6,000 admissions.
