Putnam company indicted in ‘Big Dig’ fatality case

The Putnam County company that provided the epoxy blamed in the fatal “Big Dig” tunnel collapse in Boston was indicted last week in the death of a motorist crushed by ceiling panels.

TechCity, the 260-acre campus in the town of Ulster that was built and formerly occupied by IBM Corp., has been a symbol of Ulster County's economic malaise for more than a decade.

IBM Corp. has announced it is laying off 450 workers, 300 of whom are based at its Poughkeepsie and East Fishkill facilities. Anne Conroy, president of Dutchess County Economic Development Corp., said she expected the impact on the local economy to be minimal, given that the corporation maintains a work force of 11,865 at the two plants, a level that is still above the employment levels of 2004 and 2005.
