In the 1920s, Woodstock gained fame as an arts colony. In the 1960s it was a happening place for rock musicians. The festival that bears its name ­ it took place in Bethel, 70 miles away ­ has made Woodstock one of the most famous small towns in the world and plenty of musicians still live and record in the area.

Housing costs are increasing, but wages aren't keeping up. The biggest growth in new jobs is in relatively low-paying sectors, such as retail, resulting in a greater proportion of lower-paying jobs. Job growth is slowing down at rates that are below the average for both the U.S. and the state.

The Putnam Kennel Club (PKC) of Putnam County received a Community Achievement Award from the American Kennel Club (AKC), a not-for-profit organization that maintains the world's largest registry of purebred dogs and has a membership of almost 5,000 licensees, clubs and affiliates.
