Owners of small- and medium-sized businesses in the Hudson Valley are dropping health insurance for their employees, unable to afford the high cost of premiums.

The Indian Point nuclear plant, located 35 miles north of New York City in Buchanan, has been plagued with problems. When Bayer moved its diabetes care division from Indiana to Tarrytown last year, it offered transferees a mortgage subsidy to help bridge the higher cost of housing in Westchester County. The subsidy, ranging from $75,000 to $125,000, is available for five years and pays the difference between an employee’s cost for mortgage and property tax in Indiana and in Westchester.
