1. Kenneth Adams, president and chief executive officer of The Business Council of New York State, speaks at a Greater Southern Dutchess Chamber of Commerce luncheon meeting May 2. He noted that energy prices, health insurance, workers’ compensation and business taxes are obstacles to launching and growing businesses in the state. He is optimistic, however, because the state is aware of the problems and that solutions exist, although it will take a great political effort to accomplish change,

2. Goshen Farmers Market, sponsored by the Goshen Chamber of Commerce, opened Friday May 18, with the first of the mini-concerts, which will be held on the monument at the market throughout the season. The mini-concerts are made possible by funds from the Orange County Tourism/Orange Arts and Orange County. 3. Officially known as Orange County Cerebral Palsy Association Inc., Inspire, a not-for-profit organization, which operates as an outpatient rehabilitative clinic in Goshen, recently held a Garden party to thank its Green Thumb members who support and contribute to its mission and programs. Orange County Chamber of Commerce new-member mixer

Boodles Opera House in Chester’s historic downtown was the setting for the Orange County Chamber of Commerce new-member mixer May 10, where new members were invited to the microphone to describe their businesses. Here’s a glimpse of some new and seasoned members.

1. Boodles’ owner Patricia Mazlowner, asked if her new chamber could “Please start their breakfasts at 10 a.m.” Chamber breakfasts traditionally begin promptly at 7:47 a.m. Mazlowner is also the owner of the new American bistro Maggie’s in the Alley, downstairs from here popular restaurant club Boodles.

2. New member Stacey Hillman, owner of Downtown Bread & Bakeshop in Montgomery, speaks about her business.

3. Fred Bauer of Newburgh, who is better known as “Santa Stops In,” says it’s never a bad time to celebrate Christmas, especially with July coming quickly upon us. Bauer says nothing gives him more satisfaction than bringing smiles to children of all ages.

4. The coordinators of the mixer (from left) are: Richard Cass, associate vice president of investment for David Lerner Associates in Newburgh; Roseanne Bouzakis, director of events; and Frank Gerbes, associate broker, Benchmark Realty Group in New Windsor.
