A proposal to construct a 12-story mixed-used condominium building in Kingston’s historic uptown is causing battle lines to be drawn between businesses and city officials who passionately support the project and preservationists and many residents who just as fervently oppose it. Both points of view seem valid: the need to revitalize a struggling business and cultural district on the one hand, and the need to protect the city’s 350-year-old history on the other.

U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-Hurley, has introduced an energy bill in the House of Representatives that would promote energy conservation, reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil, encourage the development of alternative fuels and repeal the $8 billion in tax breaks that benefit oil, gas, nuclear and coal companies. If passed, the bill would also be an engine of economic development, spurring the creation of new industries that employ large numbers of people and reversing the global perception of the nation as an energy laggard to energy leader, he said.

The KFC restaurant on the corner of Ulster and Foxhall avenues has been serving customers for 40 years, making it one of Kingston’s most enduring businesses. It’s also a historic landmark of sorts: owner Darlene Pfeiffer was the first woman in the city to operate a franchise.

The Harriman family’s contributions are an integral part of America’s history and particularly the history of the Hudson Valley where a town is named in their honor and where Harriman State Park is “backyard” for thousands of residents and visitors each year and where the family homestead at Arden, in Orange County, overlooks the Hudson Valley from its perch on top of the mountain. Figures larger than life that drew both kudos and controversy, the Harrimans are truly a part of Hudson Valley’s history.
