Over the past decade, Kingston’s uptown district and its downtown waterfront area have been transformed into bustling neighborhoods of galleries, restaurants and cafes. Kingston’s status as an arts center is no longer in doubt, given its inclusion profiled in a recent Business Week article of a list of the nation’s 10 best places for artists. But the city’s industrial district and midtown business area has lagged behind. Century-old abandoned brick factories loom forlornly over the railroad tracks, and the bedraggled storefronts on Broadway are a dim echo of commercial prosperity.

Vassar College was founded in 1861 by a man, Michael Vassar, who wanted to provide a liberal arts college education for women. Just shy of a century later, Vassar (www.vassar.edu) became co-ed in 1960. Among its graduates are several notables, including Crystal Eastman (Class of 1903), co-founder of the American Civil Liberties Union, and Meryl Streep (Class of 1971), Academy Award-winning actress.
